Onjala, director, Institute of Cultural Heritage and Material Science and senior lecturer at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and Daniel Kibet arap Mitei, chief curator, National Museums of Kenya.
Served as curatorial adviser for the exhibit “Through One Child’s Eyes: Medical Missionaries in Nigeria in the 1960s,” which was guest curated by Bianca Finley Alper, visual resource specialist at the J. Paul Leonard Library, and Prof. Trevor Getz, Department of History, and director, Initiative for Public Humanities. Exhibited January 25 - April 1, 2016, Special Collections Gallery of the J. Paul Leonard Library.
Traveled to Leicester, England, in April 2016, to present a paper written with Prof. Victoria Lyall, “Building a 21st Century Museum from the Ground Up,” for the “Museum Studies at Leicester 50th Anniversary Conference: The Museum in the Global Contemporary: Debating the Museum of Now,” at the Museum Studies Program, University of Leicester, U.K. In the paper, the development of SFSU’s new Global Museum is outlined.

In the area of collections-based museum research, published “Archaeological Curation and the Research Value of Archaeological Collections: a Case Study from California,” with Kent Lightfoot and Victoria L. Bradshaw, in Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archives Professionals, in 2013; and with Kent Lightfoot, Matthew Russell and Tsim D. Schneider, a book chapter titled “Shell Mound Builders of San Francisco Bay,” in First Coastal Californians, edited by Lynn Gamble, SAR Press, Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2015.
Article published with Fran Osborne and Christine Fogarty, “An Accessibility Adventure: Teaching and Learning Exhibition Design Through the Lens of Disability Studies,” in Exhibition, Fall 2014. In this article, key findings about access and exhibitions that emerged from preparations to teach a graduate exhibition design class in Museum Studies at San Francisco State University are shared.
In 2011, grant-funded project supported by the Archaeological Institute of America’s Site Preservation Program, with Prof. Luby working at the 500-year-old prehistoric site of Thimlich Ohinga in western Kenya, with Dr. Isaya Onjala, then of National Museums of Kenya.
