Overview

Kicking off Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month, this free, three-day symposium celebrates the Filipino American experience, in conjunction with the exhibit, Through My Father's Eyes. Join community members, scholars, and performers who explore themes such as legacy, diaspora and community through a series of activities presented in person at the Global Museum, Fine Arts Building, Room 203.

Space is limited to 40 per event, please register at the google form. You will have the option to select the event/s you are able to attend.

Preserving Legacy and Community History: A Panel Discussion

Explore themes of legacy, community history, and the importance of organizations like the Alvarado Project in preserving these stories. Facilitated by Mark Dean Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Art, panelists include Janet Alvarado of The Alvarado Project, Dr. John Calloway, Director of the Afro-Cuban Ensemble at SF State, and Benjamin Stone and Anna C. Lee of the Stanford University Libraries, and special guests.

Curator Walk-through and Anthology Reading

Explore the exhibit with anthology readings and a discussion with Janet Alvarado, curator and designer, Dr. Estella Habal, activist and professor emerita of Asian American Studies and Women Studies at San Jose State University, and Laarni San Juan, registered nurse, community champion, and thought leader.

Closing Celebration

Help us close Through My Father's Eyes with a celebration of music and dance in the Global Museum, featuring John Calloway and the Buffalo Soldier Afro-Filipino Project, Guru Manny Dragon and Kulintang Friends, and Alohi Vega Alvarado.
